In Australia we have law covering de facto relationships and basically if you live together for 2 years or live together with a child later you have almost exactly the same rights/obligations as if you're married.

But population still get married. It's been dropping over times past few years - as I hear it has been contained by the USA as well - but it still remains an important social/cultural/religious tradition for some family.

I think it should be a choice, if the legal or ceremonial aspects of it is far-reaching to people, they should be allowed to make that choice.

It is easier to end a relationship when in attendance is no legal tie. Marriage is a legal partnership and it is harder to newly walk away. Married couples are more likely to try to work things out more so than non married couples. I find it strange near are so many same sex couples who would love the opportunity to marry yet for those who can marry heaps don't want to.
