How long does it give somebody a lift for nicotine to catch out of a folks system?

I am asking this question because I am considering buying life insurance, and they ask if I am a smoker...I suppose they will ask for a physical exam, and will check for nicotine content...I noticed that if you are a non-smoker, the premiums are considerably lower.
