Expatriate health insurance: Requirements by country
It is impractical to provide comprehensive detail on the requirements for international and expatriate vigour insurance in every country. In addition, rules and requirements commonly differ by nationality too. Private Healthcare UK only covers the requirements for UK citizens.

Countries may hold rules on allowing you in as a long stay visitor, depending on whether you are working temporarily, enjoy moved there permanently, are a student, or retired in attendance.
In some countries, rules apply to " workers " so the position of retirees is unclear.
Some countries will now merely allow you a visa if you can prove you have health insurance.
Theory and practice, principally in non-EU countries can differ. Corruption is not unknown; in some countries you are expected to " pay packet " certain officials, while surrounded by other countries you will be thrown in jail if you try to.
In some countries you hold to buy local insurance.
In some countries you can buy international health insurance, but only if the insurer is authorised within that country.

The basic rule in most countries is that a UK citizen resident within that country is subject to the same laws and rules as adjectives other residents. There is no excuse for not doing your research on what health provision there is for foreign citizens, rules on what vigour insurance you must have, or require, before you move about abroad.

Most international health insurance policies will cover the countries mentioned below. Links to company and policy information are ONLY included when here are country specific policies.

How long are you staying in the US for, and is it for a UK/US company?

I doubt travel insurance would cover you if you were within paid employment in the US; conceivably your employer can help you. If you're looking for travel insurance, a travel company I can recommend anyhow are http://www.direct-travel.co.uk. They have really well-mannered cover, very competitive prices and are underwritten by Axa; and have a maximum trip length of one year.
