Can my sports car insurance company do this?!?

I had a letter from the Post Office today saw that I owe them lb264.17 on a policy that has ended.

When I took out the insurance surrounded by September 2007 I was on a provisional license and then passed my testing in October 2007. After a few days of passing my oral exam and receiving policy details I rang up the Post Office and told them that I have passed and that also they were spelling my name incorrectly on the document. The woman assured me it be all changed.

I then continued my insurance beside them for another year until changing to Auto Trader in September 09 as they could present a better quote.

Now the post office have sent me a memo saying that I never told them I passed my test and I owe them lb264.17. When ringing them up they told me that they hold a record of whenever I phone and there wasn't any narrative of this call. But I definatly phoned them! Surely this is their mistake (they still keep spelling my cross wrong too!) but they are denying it and just telling me I HAVE to wage it.

I don't know how I can prove that I phoned them if they never logged it?! I was also never aware that it would be more expensive after I passed my test, I other thought it would make it cheaper.

I don't really know what to do now and could do next to some advice! Thanks, Laura
