Sub-renting a house, do I inevitability renters insurance if artistic renter doesn't own any?

I'm sub-renting a house in CA (from someone renting to the owner).
That person have no home insurance.
I want insurance:
Can I take a renters insurance?
Is it the original renters role to contact it?

You need to have renters insurance to cover your personal property. Even if the owner of the dwelling have insurance on the dwelling, their policy will not cover any of your belongings. Renters policies are fairly inexpensive.
Regardless of any contract renting, sub-leasing, etc beside anyone, renter's insurance will protect your personal belongings and your personal liability. It will not cover any damages to the home you are renting. This is the owner's responsibility. If the original renter were to capture renter's insurance, it would only cover his/her belongings and personal liability.
