Oh, my. That is terrible. I didn't know they could do that. I will be watching to see what other answers you get. Good luck.
an insurance company wishes to collect from you? SO, your
son caused a grease fire. Do you think i believe that
one and only the grease fire caused the house to burn? OR is it
how he tried to put it out?

I am guessing the insurance company found you
negligent for have a minor using unsafe methods
to cook?

Presuming you do not have renter's insurance,
I suggest you ignore the enquiry from the
insurance company and hire an atty in this case.

if you be negligent, you could be hounded for
7 years.

or, the reason for the house fire could own been something else.

find out what the cause be ID'd to be. Get a copy of the
inspector's report.

If you are responsible, you have a problem. If not, you may
ignore them.

IF you be the insurance firm, what would you do? Source(s): RE broker
This is to be expected. A fire due to negligence, as this sounds to be is usually sued over. They insurance company had to pay him his coverage but they are allowed to stir after the person who caused the fire for the loss. Auto accident do the same thing.

They would hold to prove the fire was due to you not keeping the kitchen in proper directive, ie you allowed grease to build up to dangerous levels.

OR.....

That the mature you had in the house started a cooking fire.

Another big quiz is why wasn't the fire department called right away? It is rare that they come within more then 2 minutes after you call, a grease fire should not own done this kind of damage unless someone granted to watch it burn for awhile.

Either way, they are fully inside their rights to sue you. 5 months is well under every states SOL.

As far as the appraisal....it does not mingy poo-poo. They gave him the amount it will cost to repair/replace the property.

You need yourself an attorney.
you may need to directory a bk 7 as people in your home cause this damage so you as the renter are liable. The fact that the house should enjoy been a total loss is not your problem at all. That is what most surrounded by your shoes would do. Renters insurance is mostly for your posses ions and I do not think that personal liability would be covered in any valise
You are responsible for the costs to repair the damages you (or your son) caused to the property. Its market efficacy is not relevant to the amount paid out, since the owner probably had it insured to be fully repaired or replaced.

Now you know why renter's insurance is so totally important. Many of these policies will cover the exact thing for which you will be sued.

You can simply contact an attorney for advice here, and my guess is that he will suggest bankruptcy, once the insurer receive a judgment against you for $97,000/
Even though the house was worth only $36,000 plentifully of insurance companies require that houses be insured for the cost that it would take to replace them. I'd say telephone call a lawyer or go out of business or something. Good luck.

Oh, and LOL.
Someone you allowed to be in the house caused the bring down, so yes you are liable. The insurance amount is to pay for repairs or rebuilding, and the owner is required to insure it for a very elevated percentage, something like 80%, of what it would cause to renovate.
They hold to prove negligence. You might need to get ahold of an attorney.
