Does anybody know if general home insurance is irregularly doing inspections of homes?
Well, I certainly wouldn't call it hit and miss.
Most of the time, every 2-3 years, companies "reunderwrite" in certain areas. So it's not subjective. Things you can do to trigger an inspection, include having a claim, being surrounded by Florida, being within 20 miles of the coast, one in an area they are considering pulling out of, or have a particularly low value policy, or not making your payments in good time, or having a low credit score.
Many times, especially for the end two reasons, they're actually trying to find a principle to cancel your policy.
