Unless it was a part of your employment contract--yes. Employers are not required to provide vigour insurance in CA.
I assuming you were not injured at work. If yes, later it's an entirely different matter.
You should be able to return with on a COBRA though and continue the coverage at the same rate by taking over the premiums
