Do photographers usually gain benefits approaching strength insurance and stuff?

Answers: I've only shot freelance and all insurance, of any manner, is my responsibility. That covers health, unemployment, business interruption, equipment insurance, liability & worker comp. That's pretty much the story for freelancers.

If you shoot for an agency and are on staff, some of explicitly covered, but I don't know about health (possible, but what coverage?). I don't know give or take a few the chain outfits that do school photos, or portraits surrounded by malls, etc. They may have nominal coverage under a group policy. Each business will bar it their own way.

Several local operations that do photos of tourists at assorted sites do have some sort of medical coverage available after 9 months to 1 year of employment, but they don't pay much. You manufacture your money from selling (and up selling - selling more expensive packages) to the tourists. A photographer that I have worked on other projects does cruise ships part of the year and his medical are covered while he is doing that work, but only while doing that work, it doesn't cover dental, optical, etc., and has a markedly large co-pay/deductible.

Photogs usually do not get any benefits unless they are a staff photographer employed full-time by a generous company or organization such as a newspaper, university, corporation, etc. It may be possible to draw from benefits while employed by a photo studio, but those work places are usually very small and don't offer much, if any, surrounded by the way of benefits.

The trade-off for getting those benefits is that we do not own any of the work we produce while "on the clock". Those of us who do work full-time fall below what is called "work-for-hire", meaning that our employer can, and usually do, claim copyright ownership.

If you are working freelance, it is possible to enroll in a group health insurance plan for small business owners at somewhat possible rates, but forget about retirement, vacation, etc. For that, you'll be on your own.
