Obama is still a new president near a very high popularity. However, as time go on his popularity will inevitably drop, as it has with every president previously him. He needs to get this tough bill passed earlier his popularity drops, thus making it tougher to get the votes in the senate. Also, 2010 is approaching rapidly and therefore the midterm elections are coming up. Politicians are much less credible to vote for a controversial vote the closer it gets to the election date.
