I am thinking of quitting my Private condition insurance. I am terrified. Should I be?

I have been told apart from extras, medicare pays for most except all hospital costs. What really is the difference apart from not choosing your docotor and going to a public hospital. A friend of mine went to a private hospital to receive her tonsils out with her own doctor, paid up front and get all her money back, from Medicare except for $200. She have no private cover. And with a special needs child, adjectives her expenses are paid for under Medicare and they would not own been under private.
