Dental Insurance problem - what to do?

Three weeks ago I had the left side of my mouth open scaled and two crowns. At the time, I was asked to pay cheque 1780.00, which I did. I really didn't understand how I could possibly have to settle that much (I have dental insurance through my husband's work AND through my work) as everything I have ever have done was completely covered by one or the other insurances. I received my Explanation of Benefits and saw that one insurance had rewarded 775.00 on the claim, with 600.00 being written rotten (dentist contracted price) and I owe 621.00. The other insurance will take care of the 621.00. When I asked why I have to pay they said they didn't know. I then asked for a repayment and they said that I would owe another 900.00 to have the other side scaled and a tooth chock-a-block, so let's wait. Duh, I have two insurance policies that will clear and now I have to clear more? And they still have my money?

I love my dentist and don't want to change, but his organization staff stink. My question is: would it be out of line for me to single pay what I THINK my insurance might not pay on the second series? I'm not giving them any more money than I enjoy to, especially 900.00 when they still have my 1780.00. I really feel I am getting ripped past its sell-by date.

What to do?

Let me say that I really don't think my dentist would condone these practices.

The dr can singular claim from 1 insurance company legally and if the insurance does not pay, you become liable
