Effective date of the CA vehicle insurance decree?
What was the effective date on the recent insurance law that require drivers to have valid proof of insurance. I need it for a research tabloid and i cant pin down an exact date on it.

The law requiring financial responsibility and evidence of same is not a recent decree; it has been within effect for many years. Is there something specific that you're referring to?
I assume you're referring to the California Vehicle Financial Responsibility Law... 2006.
Though I'm not sure whether that made it a canon to carry proof of insurance, or just changed some of the other rules. I believe it's be a law for a very long time that you have to carry proof of insurance. Source(s): http://dmv.ca.gov/pubs/brochures/fast_fa…
Sorry, Tony, the law is a lot elder than you think. Vehicle Code section 16020 have required drivers to have proof of financial reponsibility with them since 1988 (effective January 1, 1989). (Stats. 1988, Chap. 1156, sec. 2.) Vehicle Code division 16028, requiring a driver to show proof of insurance to a police officer or traffic investigator if in an accident or cited for a traffic ruin, was enacted within 1996, effective January 1, 1997. (Stats. 1996, chap. 1126, sec. 6.) Source(s): 30+ years as a criminal defense attorney
