How soon do I call for auto insurance after getting my Driver's License?

I'm going to be getting my Drivers License for the first time in a week (I am 16), and I was wondering how soon after I get hold of my license do I need to have auto insurance to drive officially? I'd like to be able to drive the daytime I get my license, but my parents don't want to add me to their insurance plan beforehand beside the possibility of me failing the exam. Is their any kind of grace period that allows me to drive the time I get my license so I can wait until after I complete the exam to purchase insurance?

This is weird..... I can't remember how I did it.

Either.....

A. You are suppose to be insured already because you are operating it with a charter

or

B. The vehicle just needs to be insured within general, and when you get your license you can be added to the insurance on the double. Your name needs to be on the policy formerly you can drive alone though.
Depends what state you reside in, however you shouldn't need to purchase a policy for yourself until you own a vehicle, by borrowing your parents car you should be covered under their policy unless you drive it everyday.......so roughly without getting into the complicated insurance speak, you can drive legally as soon as you carry your license and get an insurance policy when you have a motor you drive all the time
