How we do it at my company, is we set up 2 claims, one under respectively policy and assign 2 adjusters, just in travel case there is any dispute over coverage or liability.
The 2 adjusters conduct separate investigations, then collect to see if they agree on liability. In clear-cut cases, this is a very fast process, and the at-fault party's coverage take care of all damages.
If liability is complicated or faint, usually each claim handles the damages of their insured and afterwards the liability is "round-tabled," a group of adjusters review the facts and make a determination.
Every precaution is taken to make sure that both sides are treated honestly and get good service. Source(s): Claims adjuster
