Where do sports car insurance/auto-repair websites draw from the info for their database from?
For instance, if I supply my registration plate number on a car insurance or replacement tyre website, the model data for my coupé is displayed: make, model, etc.
Is there a publicly searchable source of information that they are utilising, and if so what is it, or is it achieve through sharing information provided voluntarily by customers?
My question is restricted to the UK in area. Thanks!

You can get basic information on the D.V.L.A. website. If you enter the registration number and the get, it will tell you the model, the year it was first registered, the colour and type of fuel it uses (and if it's tax or not).

I'm not sure more or less the UK but cars here (USA) have a vehicle identification number (VIN). It's located on the corner of the dashboard, the door jamb, firewall &/or on the frame. It contains information roughly speaking the car like, year, put together, model, engine size, paint color etc. You can pay for more information on sites like carfax.com Is that what you're chitchat about?
